CRI adult programs are for rowers of all athletic backgrounds and ages. We offer a variety of programs to match skill level and competitive interest. Have you never done anything athletic? We welcome you! All our programs take place in one of the most beautiful locations on Boston’s Charles River and in a brand new boathouse that’s won international recognition.
Sweeps or Sculling: Which is best for me?
In sweep rowing, you will establish bonds of friendship as you row on the river with seven other people. Sign up with friends, or meet people from every walk of life, as you learn to handle an eight-person shell. Scullers row with two oars in a one-, two-or four-person shell. Sculling allows for greater independence as you explore the river. Meet people from all over the greater Boston area as you work to develop your individual rowing skills in a group setting.
Beginners have two options to kick off their rowing journey: Intro to Rowing or Sculling 1.
Intro to Rowing
Intro to Rowing is our basic introductory sweep class, which will get you on the Charles and learning the basics in no time. It’s perfect for people of all fitness levels and previous athletic experience! Class begins in a stable 12-person catamaran in which you will become familiar with rowing terminology and the fundamentals of technique while learning to row in a fun group environment. Upon successful completion of Intro to Rowing, students can progress to Novice Sweeps, General Sweeps 1, and General Sweeps 2. After that, if you’re interested in rowing competitively, you can try out for our Men’s and Women’s Competitive teams.
In Sculling 1, you will learn the river traffic patterns, how to navigate, and how to row, embarking on the Charles in safe, stable shells. After successful completion of Sculling 1, you can progress to Sculling 2, 3, and 4, which will prepare you to take the captain’s test, successful completion of which allows you to sign up for Logbook Sculling so that you can take out a single and row on your own. Coached group sessions are also available for logbook scullers.
